Information about healthcare accessible to everyone

Design Lead

Background – 1177 Vårdguiden is one of Sweden’s most well-known healthcare brands, providing fact-checked medical information. The site was built on a complex CMS platform shared with several other critical health services owned by Inera. The project was run by an agile, cross-functional team from Knowit, in close collaboration with Inera.

Challenge – Since 1177 is jointly owned by all 23 Swedish regions, aligning stakeholders and reflecting regional differences was essential. The organization was siloed, with no unified ownership of the overall user experience—across both public-facing and logged-in services. The primary challenge was to ensure accessibility for all users.

Outcome – We developed a flexible concept that could support multiple services with different visual identities and unique requirements. 1177 was the most complex, with regional content, multilingual support, and strict editorial standards. The new design improved accessibility (receiving top marks), simplified workflows for editors, and made information easier to find through improved navigation and search. The concept also supported services like UMO, Youmo, and Rådgivningsstödet Webb on the same platform.
